Default energy management on Mo/Rt

I just started my first ever monk (maybe not the best move, since it used my last char. slot, 3 days before learning about the upcoming PvE beta event for nightfall ), and am looking for a little help on energy management. I intend for the character to be mostly PvE (and some AB's), and I will be doing divine favor + protection mainly. Now, I would like to try going Mo/Rt, with an initial thought of seeing how Union goes (still working on the exacts of my build, but I try to avoid cookie cutters if I can).

So, my question is are there any worthwhile energy management skills in the monk lines or communing. Sadly, I don't see myself maintaining enchantments to make blessed sig. really worth anything. Do the more experienced monk players out there have any ideas?

Or, should I just can the /Rt idea, swap union for shielding hands (similar effect), and go /Me to capitalize on inspiration (energy tap, energy drain, or mantra of recall, etc.)? I'd rather not do this, but if that's what it comes down to, I'll consider it.

If my monk is running a secondary with no energy mgmt skills, I go boon prot and use boon signet. After Guardian, RoF (provided RoF isnt instantly used), or whatever enchantment slap them with the signet for +X energy. The recharge on the sig is nominal so you can slap it on yourself at random for an extra +2 off of Divine Boon.

Yeah, I guess my build is close to a personal PvE twist of boon prot. When I get further along, I'll give what you suggest a try.... not sure that's gonna cut it, though.

Only e-managment skill I can think of on a Mo/Rt is Attuned Was Songkai, but that's Spawning Power so you'd have to go Rt/Mo. Boon Signet seems like an ok skill, if your build is ench heavy.

i used to run a ds spammer build, and recently switched to a boon port with MoR as e mgmt...

but i guess if you go divine line, SoD is definitely a nice skill to e mgmt... though i have to say 2 sec cast can definitely be a killer, esp in amist of combat....

boon siggy is nice, but i guess as long as you don't over heal, BL can be equally powerful... (though that requires lots of micro'ing to actually do it well...)

lastly, you can slap on DS for a 18 sec energy mgmt... recharge of 60 sec is a pain tho...

Guess I'm just gonna have to try a bunch of stuff out and see how it goes. I have a new question, though. I'm realizing that my usual patters of attribute points and runes may not hold true for a monk. For example, a guildmate pointed out that I may not want my usual 1 superior rune. Also, I'm having trouble deciding what emphasis to put on att. points, seeing as raising divine favor will increase my healing, but that also inherently weakens my prot spells and RoF's heal.

Can anyone make suggestions here? I'm envisioning getting union up to 8, but this could vary, also.

I don't recommend using Ritualist spirits on a primary monk. Not only will they be weaker and have less hp, but you will have to spend 3+ seconds casting them each time, during which you are not healing or proting your teams and they may die. Either go Mo/* for active prot/heal or Rt/* for passive prot. Don't try to fill both roles with one character, because you won't be very good at either.

Ritualist:

Essence Strike - gain energy if you are near a spirit
Attuned Was Songkai (e) - reduces spell cost by %

Monk:
Blessed Signet - gain energy for each enchantment you are maintaining
Healing Light (e) - gain energy if target ally is under the effects of an enchantment
Peace And Harmony (e) - +1 health and energy regen if you do not harm anyone.

Attuned is for Rit/x, so as a Mo/Rit, its not that useful. Essence Strike does damage, so no healing there.

Raw +energy is nice, but you can get away with efficiency easily - if it's doable in PvP, you can definitely do it in PvE. You just have to carefully select skills that are energy efficient instead of splurging on inefficient energy hogs, like the oh-so-popular Healing Breeze.

This means:

Signets. Signet of Devotion is your best friend. Learn to spam the hell out of the thing on recharge, and cancel it if it is going to fail to heal. When I'm monking in PvE around 1/3 of my time is spent casting Signet of Devotion.

Take the most efficient heals you can find. A lot of elites are good for this - Word, Healing Light, etc. But there are good non-elites too, Mend Condition is excellent for heal + removal, Vigorous Spirit heals for a ton over its duration, and Gift of Health is straight up outstanding.

You can free up your secondary for whatever you want if you're efficient, but I don't think Union is going to be what you're looking for. Having to not cast for nearly 4 seconds to put it down is pretty poor, and it's going to prevent very little damage before dying at reasonable attribute specs.

Rits don't have a whole lot of energy management skills. Maybe that's why Anet decided to give them prolly the single best energy management skill in the game.

Unfortunately, you'd have to go Rt/Mo to reap the full benefit, and in that case maybe it'd be better to just go with a full-blown restoration build.

At 16 spawning power and 15 restoration (with Attuned was Songkai active):

Mend Body and Soul --> heals 115 --> costs 2 energy
Soothing Memories --> heals 100 --> cost -1 energy
Spirit Light --> heals 155 --> costs 2 energy

Note that casting Soothing Memories will actually result in a net +1 energy. Mend Body and Soul is also condtion removal.

An Attuned Rt is a very very energy efficient healer.

I agree with Ensign here. Smart skill selection/use is the best form of energy management in PvE.
You don't even need an energy management skill in PvE if your build is proper.

Just go pure monk, and take nothing but 5e spells and a signet or two (Signet of Devition and Signet of Rejuvenation are both fantastic in PvE).
For your 5e spells, bring things like Orison, Kiss, Word, Vigorous, Mend Condition/Ailment, etc.
You can cast non-stop and never run out of energy.
